Fluoride is an important treatment if you want to maintain healthy teeth throughout your life. Most toothpaste brands include fluoride as one of the ingredients, so regular brushing habits will result in fluoride treatment for your gums on a daily basis.

But, the fluoride content in your toothpaste might not be enough. Adults and children with a moderate or high risk for tooth decay can benefit from extra fluoride protection.

Why is Fluoride Needed for Dental Health?

Fluoride is a mineral that helps with cavity prevention. If bacteria is present and it starts to damage the tooth, then fluoride is beneficial to repair the teeth in these early stages. Instead of waiting for major dental decay in the future, it is a good idea to be proactive with preventive treatments.

Fluoride is available through systemic and topical treatments. Examples of systemic fluoride include fluoridated water and supplementation. Topical fluoride products are applied to the surface of the tooth, usually in the form of toothpaste, mouth rinse, or a gel treatment.

You can use over-the-counter toothpaste and mouthwash products that contain fluoride. But, you should talk to a dentist if you need a stronger treatment. Prescription toothpaste can be used that contain high levels of fluoride, or you might consider a one-time treatment in the dental office.

Fast Treatment for Long-Term Dental Health

People of all ages can be at risk for dental decay, so don’t overlook the benefits of getting fluoride treatments as an adult. Your dentist can help you determine if these treatments are needed for your oral health.

Professional fluoride treatments only take a few minutes of time when you are in the office for an exam. But, the effects can provide strong teeth so that you can maintain a beautiful smile for many years. Follow the dentist’s instructions after the treatment to gain the best results. For example, you might be instructed to refrain from eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes after the appointment. This waiting time gives the teeth an opportunity to absorb the fluoride.

High-risk patients need fluoride treatments more frequently than the general population. Your dentist might suggest professional treatment frequencies of three, six, or twelve months.

If you want to reduce your risk of dental cavities in the future, then you shouldn’t hesitate to add fluoride treatments to your dental appointments. For more information, talk to our team to learn about the treatment options that are available in our office.
